River Raid was launched by Activision in 1982 to a flurry of critical acclaim. Jets were piloted over the (cue scary narrator voice) ‘River of No Return’, and so long as fuel is replenished and the player doesn’t crash, gameplay could continue forevermore. River Raid included a wealth of opportunities for destruction: helicopters, hot air balloons, fuel depots and even bridges. *Sigh*, satisfying.
